The Serengeti hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world, which is one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world. Serengeti is derived from the Masai language, specifically, "Serengit" meaning "Endless Plains". Approximately 70 larger mammals and some 500 avifauna species are found there. This high diversity in terms of species is a function of diverse habitats ranging from riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands. Blue Wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalos are some of the commonly found large mammals in the region. With the predators, like Lion, Cheetah and Leopard close on their heels.

Day 11: Serengeti National Park

A second full day in Serengeti National Park with morning and afternoon game drives.

(Lion at the Ngorongoro Conservation)

Day 12: Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact caldera in the world. Its enduring charm stems from its overwhelming physical beauty and the abundance of wildlife, permanent residents on the crater floor. En-route visits the Olduvai Gorge, a site of archaeological findings, where traces of prehistoric man dating back 3.5 million years ago have been discovered. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

Day 13: Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast, you will depart for half day tour of the crater floor. A population of approximately 25,000 large animals live in the crater; these include the black rhinoceros, and the hippopotamus, which is very uncommon in the area, the wildebeest, the zebra, the eland, and Grant's and Thompson's gazelles. The crater has the densest known population of lions, numbering 62 in 2001. On the crater rim are leopards, elephants, mountain reedbuck, and buffalo. In the middle of the crater there is a large lake inhabited by hundreds of flamingoes and from a distance, they appear as a pink border of the lake. The Crater, a large, unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera was formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago, is 610 m deep and its floor covers 260 km2.

You will return to your lodge for lunch and the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. For your pleasure a late afternoon sundowner has been arranged with spectacular crater views.
